Dr. Benson received his bachelor’s degree in animal science from the University of Vermont in 1979 and his master’s degree in biology from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1984 and his Ph.D. in entomology from Clemson in 1988. He has worked in research and development for Ciba-Geigy in Switzerland and Dow Chemical. After working as an Extension Entomologist at Auburn University he returned to Clemson in 1997. He had responsibilities for research and education programs concerning household and structural pests in South Carolina. For 14 years, he could be heard on the SC Educational Radio Show, Your Day, answering call -in questions about bugs. After serving Clemson University for 31 years, Dr. Benson retired June of 2019 but has returned to Clemson on a part time basis to continue to serve the pest control industry and public with Extension programs.
Ryan Okey graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelors in Turfgrass Science and a Masters in
Agricultural Education. Ryan started working for the Department of Pesticide Regulation in 2003 as a Field Investigator. He currently serves as the Assistant Director for the Department. In that role, he oversees all of the Department’s day to day activities. He is the immediate past president of the
Association of Structural Pest Control Regulatory Officials. He serves as chairman of ASPCRO’s
Termiticide Label Review Committee and member of the Structural Fumigation/Building Codes Committee.
Andrew Pierson has been the Entomologist for the Charleston County Mosquito Control Program since January 2022, where he traps mosquitoes and uses PCR technology to test them for arboviruses such as West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. He graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a B.S. in Biological Sciences in 2020 and worked for the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management’s Mosquito Abatement Program doing arbovirus surveillance for two years before moving to Charleston. He holds a Pesticide Applicator License in the Public Health category and currently resides in West Ashley.
Thom Nolan started with the family business, TCI, in 1978, handling general office duties. From 1979 through 1989, he worked adjusting all types of property and casualty claims throughout the Southeast US. During that time, he was first introduced to pest control related damage claims. After another company acquired TCI, he opened an office in Charleston to handle the entire state. After Hugo hit in 1989, he was responsible for handling or supervising thousands of claims, many of which related to termites or other WDO’s.
Nolan & Company was started in April 1996 with a primary focus on the pest control industry. He developed Pest Control Claims Systems (PCCS) to educate adjusters, claims people and the pest control industry how to investigate, evaluate and resolve claims for all types of claims. Over the last 23 years, Mr. Nolan has handled thousands of claims involving all types of pest control related claims all over the United States, some with demands in the tens of millions of dollars.
Dr. Zee Ahmed has been researching entomological pests, with a focus on pests in turf and ornamental landscapes, for approximately ten years. He previously worked in this field during his postdoc at the University of Florida for about three years. He then served as a scientist with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for approximately four years, followed by a role as a Research Entomologist with the USDA in Florida for another four years. He is currently an assistant professor of turf and ornamental entomology at Clemson University.”
Eli Oyler has been an Entomologist with Charleston County Mosquito Control since July of 2024. He aids in the trapping and identification of mosquitoes throughout the county, as well as monitors for arboviruses in mosquito populations. He graduated from Georgetown University in 2024 with a B.S. in Environmental Biology. Before joining Charleston County, he previously performed research at Georgetown investigating the spatial distribution and associated biodiversity of salt marsh grasses. He currently resides in Mount Pleasant.
